Chemical Sensor Development

This project will focus on the development of micro-array sensors that are based on mass detection. These unique sensors will make use of molecularly engineered sensing layer build by surface polymerization methods developed in our laboratory. It is envisioned that these sensors will be applied to vapor phase detection of volatile organics as well as dissolved organics and inorganic species in solution. The project will require the adaptation of surface silylation methods (gas phase and anhydrous methods) and polymerization methods (e.g., plasma polymerization and radical graft polymerization) and the application of a variety of nano-technology tools to manipulate and organize surface structures. Also, kinetic and transport models will be applied to describe and help optimize sensor's response and neural networks will be utilized for pattern recognition (i.e., species identification).

Fundamental areas: reaction engineering, transport phenomena, surface science, sensors, nano-technology, electrochemistry, and molecular modeling.
